The ocean holds many wonders that we can’t find on land. Sometimes, you could even create unlikely friendships with the marine species roaming around the ocean floor, like seals!

Seals are just underwater dogs with their adorable snout, prickly whiskers, and big, round eyes. They are quite playful and friendly to humans as well. According to Bark Post, dogs and seals are not far off from being related to each other. Seals, walruses, and sea lions are caniforms, meaning they have doglike characteristics. Perhaps the only difference between them is the seal’s pair of flippers.

Ben Burville, a doctor and a recreational diver, has experience playing with the seals. It has been 20 years since he started hanging out with these sea dogs, and he enjoys every bit of it. He said that his encounter with these 450-pound sea animals would magically stop time.

The seals are unlike the ones they put in a sanctuary or the zoo. These seals are wild animals that Burville happens to encounter every time he dives down into the ocean. These creatures freely swim toward him out of curiosity and will just start touching him.

From the seal’s interaction with Burville, you can tell that they are intelligent creatures.

“They’re very, very gentle,” stressed Burville. “I think what’s also quite clever is, they know what is me, and physically me.”

He noticed that the seals knew how to recognize equipment. There was no harm done to Burville as these curious seals tried to take off his hood and dive mask only to play with it. They just like to play games with the other seals and even Burville.

Burville just lets the seals do whatever they want.

He makes sure that he was not in any way disturbing the seals in their habitat. He just dives in there and chills with them. He never approaches them or forces them to come to him. Instead, he just lets them go to him on their own.

These wild animals will just act according to their interests. Whatever they do, it poses no threat or any harm to Burville. That is why Burville will try to maintain this peaceful relationship between himself and the seals.

“I would trust any wild seal underwater more than any domesticated dog, any day,” said Burville.
