Lockdown can be a lonely time for many people, especially those who live alone. Not being able to go out or even have your friends round for a cuppa is enough to drive even the most introverted of us insane, and many of us can admit to making friends with somebody we normally wouldn’t talk to during lockdown (moody next-door neighbor, anyone?)

Of course, those who have a pet are totally winning at life right now – but for the rest of us lonely souls, what are we supposed to do? Well, one man has the answers.

This man came across seven caterpillars in some broccoli during lockdown, and he decided to raise the little guys himself and begin the start of a great friendship.

Finding seven caterpillars in your fruit and veg is most people’s worst nightmare – but for Sam Darlaston, it was the opportunity to make some friends during lockdown. The 27-year-old radio presenter was about to cook some broccoli when he spotted the caterpillars and rescued them from what would have been almost certain death.

Then, in a hilarious turn of events, instead of letting them outside into his garden, he decided that the most sensible thing to do was to raise them in his house – and he shared the whole process on Twitter with us!

Sam captioned his post:

“Hey @Tesco I was about to cook my favourite vegetable of all time (broccoli) and after unwrapping it, to my surprise, found caterpillars inside! They’re really nice and we’ve ended up keeping one as a pet and naming him. but just as a heads up, some of your broc has c-pillars.”

But that wasn’t the end of this caterpillar story. Sam’s seven caterpillars soon settled into their new home, and he made sure to share the whole thing with his followers. He named each of his new pets, and they even began to develop their own little personalities.

Same posted a video of one of his creepy-crawlies, along with the hilarious caption:

“In case anyone is interested, the name we’ve gone with is Cedric, he’s from Spain (at least we assume so because the broccoli is) and he dances after eating spinach and broc all day long.”

There was even a caterpillar romance. Sam said:

“Day 3, and we’ve got our first caterpillar romance story. Janine and Slim Eric nap together, eat together, and occasionally dance together”

Someone get these caterpillars their own reality TV show!

Just when we didn’t think it was possible, things began to get even more dramatic. The caterpillars were evolving! Sam shared a picture of caterpillar Cedric, and he’s had quite the transformation. He’s now a beautiful butterfly!

“Broc then became a chrysalis on Friday night… But then on SUNDAY MORNING I WAS GREETED BY CEDRIC!!!! he’s changed a bit.”

In an emotional moment, Sam shared videos of him releasing each of his butterflies into the wild, and we feel like this Twitter thread has taken us on a ride! We’d definitely recommend checking out the whole thread, as there are so many hilarious posts that we couldn’t fit into just one article. Thanks for the lockdown entertainment, Sam!
