Cats have a reputation for not being the most sociable of animals. They tend to like their own space and are pretty territorial, so when we came across a story of two cats who actually wanted to be friends, we simply couldn’t handle the levels of cuteness.
A video was shared to show exactly how their friendship blossomed, and it’s the sweetest thing we’ve seen in a while.
In the video, which was shared onto Facebook by The Dodo, one cat owner explains how a friendship blossomed between her cat, Simon, and the neighbor’s cat, Theo. The post received a lot of love, with 6.9 million views, as well as 127k reactions and over 20k shares. We’re not surprised, because this really is a love story to rival Titanic.
Simon’s owner, Mackenzie, explained how Simon had first spotted their neighbor’s cat in the window opposite their flat.
“One night I had my shades down,” she said. “Simon started crawling through the shades and making this chirping noise. So I went to the window and there was another cat sitting in my neighbor’s window. This went on for probably a week before I was like, ‘okay we need to get some answers here.'”
Mackenzie filmed the staring standoff between the two cats and joked, “This is a modern love story about to happen. I can’t do this.”
Another morning, Simon was back in the window making his chirping sounds. Mackenzie began to wonder about the other cat, and she knew that Simon was too. So she decided to write a note on Simon’s behalf.
“I decided to at least figure out what this cat’s name is,” she said. “So I put a note in the window asking, ‘What’s your cat’s name?'”
Mackenzie had never met her neighbors before, so she had no idea what response she was going to receive. It was a nerve-wracking moment as her and Simon waited for a reply.
“I don’t know my neighbors personally so I was kind of scared,” Mackenzie recalled. “I put up the sign and then walked away to do the dishes. When I came back there was a response in the window. It said ‘hi Simon, I’m Theo. You’re my best friend.'”
After that, the two neighbor’s took each other’s numbers and began texting.
“We started going back and forth.” Mackenzie said. “She’d message me pictures from her view and it’s super weird because I can see into my room. I really pushed for our cats to meet.”
By this point, it seemed as if the whole internet was behind Mackenzie, and she was feeling the pressure. “If this goes wrong, I don’t want to break everybody’s heart,” she fretted.
The day of the meeting finally arrives, and as Mackenzie puts Simon into his cat carrier, Theo’s owner Brianna is prepping Theo for his big day. “Are you excited?” She asks him.
The two women film the moment that the cats meet, and it’s so sweet to see! After all this time, the two kitties finally get to meet face-to-face, and while Theo seems a little hesitant, Simon is full of love for his neighbor.
“Simon was following Theo like a little puppy dog. I think at first Theo was a little overwhelmed.” Mackenzie said. “Just seeing how happy it made him was really fun. I think it’s just so pure that even animals can be friends.”
A year on from their initial meeting, The Dodo caught up with Mackenzie to see whether the friendship between the pair remained – and thankfully, it has.
“Ever since then, the love hasn’t died, they still look at each other.” Mackenzie said. “If Simon sees any type of movement at all, he runs to the window. He’s very creepy, he just stares at them all the time.”
But was Simon content with having just one kitty friend? Absolutely not! When another cat appeared in a window farther down from Theo’s, Simon was straight up in the window trying to make friends again.
“Simon ran to the window and I heard him making the chirping noise.” Mackenzie recalled. “I just assumed okay, like it’s Theo, I get it.”
So imagine Mackenzie’s surprise when she saw that the cat belonged to another neighbor! “All I can think is not again,” she joked.
We’ve loved seeing this adorable friendship between Simon and Theo, and we’re very much hoping for a part two with the new neighbor’s cat! Watch the adorable video below.
