In case you haven’t realized, when it comes time to buy or rescue a dog, they pick you, not the other way around. Sometimes, it’s the look in their eyes or the way they wag their tail that attracts your attention. They’re doing that on purpose so you notice them.

But then sometimes, an individual comes across a pup that’s been abandoned. In those instances, a kindhearted person would never leave the dog behind. Often, they’ll take the animal to a local shelter or rescue organization. Yet there are rare times when the outcome is completely different.

Just making the rounds

On a normal day, officers Mercado and Tavera from the Hollywood division of the Los Angeles Police Department were out patrolling as they always do. But on this particular day, they spotted something that looked out of place.

Rounding him up

Often, these cops are busy capturing bad guys. But in this case, they were tasked with rounding up a teeny dog. If they didn’t, there was a good chance he’d be hit by a car. So, they did the right thing.

Taken to an animal shelter

After grabbing the little boy, the officers drove him to a local animal shelter. After the staff did their due diligence, they discovered this precious pup had been abandoned by his previous owner. How could anyone do that to such a sweet thing?

He needed a name

Realizing that someone had simply let this puppy go only for him to end up on Hobart Boulevard, the officers felt the right thing to do was to give him a name. They came up with something perfect — Hobart — of course.

Finding him a forever home

Although officers Mercado and Tavera had done a good deed in getting this pup of a busy LA street, taking him to a shelter, and giving him a name, their work wasn’t done yet. Now, they needed to find this sweet boy a forever home.

Sharing his story

That’s when they hatched a plan. The police department station where the two of them work shared Hobart’s photo on social media. While they didn’t think it would take too long for someone to show interest but in this pup’s case, it was just hours before offers came rolling in.

Forming a bond

But there was a problem. These officers had invested time and emotion in this puppy. So, the thought of him going to a stranger was hard. At one point, Mercado added a video of this little biy following him around. In this puppy’s mind, Mercado was his human.

Inside jokes

In no time, other officers at the LAPD Hollywood Division started joking around that this puppy was now the newest member of their K9 team. But in reality, they knew he would end up being more of a lap dog.

Internal struggle

While all this was going on and more people showing interest in adopting Hobart, Officer Mercado felt unsettled inside. He’s not quite sure when it happened but he and this puppy had developed a trusting friendship.

A perfect ending

That’s when it hit Mercado, he wanted to become Hobart’s official owner. So, he adopted him. As you can imagine, this adorable puppy now has the best home ever. He’s loved and cared for and will never again have to worry about abandonment.
