For anyone who loves animals, seeing one in distress is heartbreaking. Especially when it involves a large horse that can’t help itself out of a bad situation. Sadly, that’s what happened to a sweet girl. She found herself in serious trouble and without the aid of humans, she’d likely die.
She’s wild
It’s bad enough when a domesticated horse ends up in trouble but when it involves one that’s wild, the situation becomes even more challenging. After all, wild horses aren’t accustomed to being around humans so even though they try to help, the animal may not see it that way.
A serious predicament
One mare ended up in a muddy pond. The harder she tried to free herself, the deeper she sunk. Things had become so bad for this girl that the experts said had she been in there even one more night, she wouldn’t have lived.
An unexpected discovery
Thankfully, a group of people from the Help Alberta Wildies Societies (HAWS) were out scouting for new foals close to Sundre, Alberta, Canada. By complete happenstance, they came across this mare and quickly realized the situation was dire.
The poor girl was scared
As the group approached the mare, she began to struggle. She was scared, not only from being stuck in the mud but also by the humans coming toward her. One of the members of the society, Darrell Glover, spoke to her in a soft voice, “Easy, easy girl.”
They needed to come up with a plan and quickly
As the members looked at the mare, they estimated she was roughly two years old. Sadly, the other wild horses she stayed with had all abandoned her. So, there she was alone and in desperate need of help. That’s when the members of HAWS kicked things into high gear.
This horse was exhausted and hungry
Considering the situation, the HAWS’ members needed to work fast but also carefully as to not hurt the horse. Using some ropes that they had on them and sticks from the nearby land they went to work. During this time, they spoke softly to the mare and even stroked her neck.
They worked for more than an hour
This group was determined to get the mare out of the pond. While they didn’t know how long she’d been stuck, it must’ve been quite a while since she’d eaten every blade of grass within her reach.
Time to start pulling
After attaching ropes around the mare, they then connected them to their ATVs. Ever so slowly and with extreme care, they began to pull. It took a while but then they began some headway. Inch by inch, the mare came closer to freedom.
Achieving success
Banding together, these people were finally able to pull this precious girl onto solid ground. At that point, she was so tired all she could do was lay there. Although it was an ordeal for her, she seemed to know they were there to help, not hurt her.
But then, something miraculous happened
Remember, this mare is wild and more than likely she’s never encountered a human before. After getting to her feet, rather than run off, she stood there. Typically, a wild horse would bolt even after such an exhausting ordeal…but this girl.
Returning to her brood
Glover pointed out that there was a good chance she’d catch up to her brood. But if not, she’d be accepted by another one.
This beautiful mare stood there for the longest time, no longer afraid of the strangers who came to help. She even walked over to the nearest grass and began to eat. What a beautiful story of people rescuing a wild animal.
