The plight of an animal in need is not something that many people can endure. Many of us have a desire to help those in need, even if “those” have four paws and a wet nose. It is the little act that often means to much to the animal we are helping, even if they can’t tell us.
A man saw a disturbing sight one day while in his home.
Robert Rojas was in his home one day when he encountered a situation that he wasn’t ready for. Sitting inside, his alarm started going off, notifying him that there was movement near his front porch. Robert had a video surveillance system and was able to look to see what the disturbance was.
Going outside, he noticed a stray animal roaming around, looking strange.
As he investigated further, he discovered why the animal couldn’t be recognized right away. It was a stray dog that was wandering around with a massive chain wrapped around its neck. He walked outside with a bag of chips to see if he could lure the dog in closer.
Deciding to help, Robert slowly approached the dog, unsure of how it would react to him.
Getting closer, the dog greeted him with a wagging tail and a kindness that didn’t mirror the situation it was in. It was a female, and she had a chain wrapped around her neck, secured with a huge padlock. Robert knew that the dog needed his help immediately.
“I don’t understand how anyone could be that cruel. The chain was so aggressively tied on the dog that it was digging into her skin.”
Robert slowly earned the dog’s trust with some treats from a bag and discovered that it was incredibly sweet, even with his daughter!
After gaining some trust with the dog, he took it to the nearest animal care center to remove the chain and get the help that it needed. While this was an act of kindness from Robert that many would do, he wasn’t done yet.
Calling the Center for Animal Welfare, Robert helped to draft a bill that would outlaw improper leashing of animals and pets.
After seeing the horrible condition of a dog with a 30-lb chain on its neck, people were spurred to action. The local government even got involved with making these new laws a reality!
“I was very surprised and alarmed to find how few laws there are on the books that address animal cruelty in Oklahoma,” Democratic state representative Mickey Dollens told KFOR after Robert Rojas had approached him about the matter.
Robert did more than just help a dog in need; he set a precedent for all animals in the future to receive better treatment.
While he wasn’t able to adopt the dog, she got the care she needed because of Robert. His legacy with the animals of Oklahoma will remain as people work to pass laws to better care for the state’s animals.
“Never chain your dog, especially to a tree fence or pickup truck. The likelihood that they die from suffocation is increased and it’s just no way to treat a pet,” Dollens continued. “I challenge people in the district, or in Oklahoma City, or surrounding areas, if you’re able to love and nurture an animal, go out there.”
