Animal abuse certainly seems like something that should have been abolished long ago.
Unfortunately, there are cruel, heartless people in today’s world who still think it’s acceptable to treat their pets appallingly.
Shocking statistics estimate that every year, more than 10 million animals in the US die from abuse.
It’s sickening to think about, and if you were to witness an animal abuse situation yourself, you’d probably do everything you could to get the helpless animal out of that situation.
When one woman heard about a man keeping a mamma dog chained up in his back yard, she knew she couldn’t sit back and do nothing.
Lisa, from Frankie, Lola and Friends Rescue in Los Angeles, has seen her fair share of animal abuse cases.
Her job is to rescue animals from dangerous or neglectful situations. While it can be rewarding to give an animal a second chance at life, it must also be incredibly harrowing to see animals in distress.
When Lisa arrived at the man’s property, she came across a sight that was “pretty upsetting”.
While her pups roamed free, the mamma dog was tied to a tree with a heavy chain around her neck.
It was clear that she had been there for a long time. Her nails were long, her fur scruffy, and she was completely emaciated.
It seemed that in this case, the dog’s owner didn’t realize that there were resources that could help him.
Needless to say, despite allowing the rescue team onto his property, the man had definitely overstepped the boundaries by keeping his dogs in such a poor condition.
The pups were taken to the car – but there was a problem.
The owner, who had been compliant so far, refused to give up the chained mamma dog. So it was down to Lisa to attempt to convince him on the matter.
In a video recorded on the property, she can be heard saying:
“You’re awesome. You did the right thing. You’re a good guy, I can tell. That female, though – she’s underweight, and does she stay chained up all day to that – “
The guy explained that he let the mamma dog off her chain sometimes, and that she slept in her dog house.
Lisa, however, still wasn’t convinced.
She requested that the man put the mamma dog in the garage to sleep at night, offering to give him a bed.
The ideal result would have been to take the dog away from the man’s home entirely, but for Lisa, this was a step in the right direction.
But then, something unexpected happened: the man told Lisa to open her car door.
Because Lisa had treated the owner with kindness, he was willing to work with them.
Lisa was able to take all of the dogs away from the property. The man didn’t ask for money, but Lisa gave him $40, and told him:
“Sometimes we need to ask for help when we get underwater, when we have too many dogs.”
The chained dog, named Mamma Lucky, now had a bright future ahead of her.
In her foster home, she gained around 1 pound a day. She now spends her days playing with her foster siblings and living her best doggy life.
