Everyone deserves a chance to survive, but sometimes, nature can be quite cruel to animals. Whenever one of an animal’s new litter is born sickly and weak, the mother would show no mercy and just leaves that offspring to die. Although, we get rare instances when another family is willing to take responsibility for the rejected offspring, thus, taking it as their own. For example, we have this rejected puppy whose life turned around after a momma cat decided to adopt him.

A puppy that was probably considered the runt of the litter was mercilessly abandoned by its mother immediately after birth. It would be hard to nurture him to survive if a mother is absent. Even with human intervention, the chance of survival would be slim.

Luckily for this pup, a willing volunteer was present, and with no hesitation, they took the puppy in along with her litter. It was a momma cat who gave birth to several healthy kittens. Apparently, the kittens and the rejected puppy were born at the same time, perhaps making it easier to understand why the momma cat took him in.

It is a fact that dogs are often more active and competitive when it comes to food so, normally this puppy is the same as his foster invites everyone during feeding time. With this doggy behavior, the adopted puppy was louder and whinier than his kitten siblings. He would not hesitate to shove his siblings to make space for himself to contest for food. Regardless, the generous momma cat treats them all as equals and gives them an equal amount of love and affection. She would groom them one by one and had them sleep beside each other almost all the time.

Why do animals adopt?

While it seems like it would be rare to see heart-melting instances just like this, it actually does happen all the time. This is even true in the wild, and not just with mammals too. Why this happens, even experts had no conclusive fact that explains this behavior. However, they have plenty of interesting theories that make perfect sense on why this phenomenon occurs. A behaviorist named Jill Goldman was also featured in National Geographic’s article on this matter and has shared several of her theories.

Although, only one is a perfect fit explaining this momma cat’s behavior.

“Moms might be more willing to take on youngsters because when moms have given birth, they have a high level of oxytocin, that bonding hormone,” Goldman said.

It makes perfect sense, especially when momma cat gave birth to her litter at the same time the puppy was born.

Their relationship might just change in the future.

No one could deny that dogs and cats are way different. They might be fine as kittens and pups, but the moment they grow up, things would drastically change. BBC explains their differences between the two by showing a clip of an adult cat and dog drinking a bowl of milk. This alone could already prove the many differences they have as separate species. Cats are usually graceful and careful in scooping a sufficient amount of liquid back into their mouths.

They tend to spill less, thus less milk is wasted.

On the other hand, the dog in the video drank milk like there’s no tomorrow, with the liquid splashing all around. This behavior could be linked to a pack’s competition, and it makes sense that the “dog-eat-dog” idiom sums them up very well. Nevertheless, there is a chance that they could still get along, and we could only hope that it’s the same for this little puppy.
